Americans increasingly discouraged over Iraq: poll WASHINGTON (AFP) - Americans are increasingly disappointed with the general direction of United States, the war in Iraq and Congress' new Democratic majority, according to a survey out Tuesday. Just 39 percent of those surveyed in the Washington Post-ABC News poll said they approved of Congress' work, down five points from April when the new Democratic majority had been in place for 100 days. Support for the congressional Democrats elected in November slid 10 points during the same period, the survey said, to 44 percent now. The poll underscored that public support for the war in Iraq further eroded. In April Americans said they backed the new congressional majority over President George W. Bush by 25 percent. While lawmakers still have more support than Bush on the unpopular war issue, their advantage over Bush slid to 16 percent. After a presidential veto amd more pledged resistance, the Democrats have dropped efforts to link financing the war effort to a timetable for the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. Fifty-five percent of those questioned said the number of troops in Iraq should be reduced, a new high, although only 15 percent of those polled demanded an immediate withdrawal. Overall, 61 percent of those surveyed disapprove of the war, while 53 percent believe it has not helped bring long term security. And 64 percent believe the United Stated is not making meaningful progress on restoring order in Iraq. Skepticism about the war, Bush and Democratic lawmakers helped fuel a downbeat attitude: 73 percent said the country was headed in a bad direction, the survey of 1,205 adults on May 29-June 1, found.
